The Hottie and The Nottie (stylized as The Hottie & The Nottie) is a 2008 American romantic comedy film starring Paris Hilton (who also produced the film), Joel David Moore, Christine Lakin and The Greg Wilson. Written by Heidi Ferrer and directed by Tom Putnam, the film began shooting in January 2007 and was released theatrically on February 8, 2008. The film was a critical failure and box office bomb, and has been called one of the worst films of all time.

Nate moves to L.A. to track down Christabel, the woman he's been in love with since childhood, only to discover that his plan to woo her only has one hurdle to overcome: what to do with June, Christabel's ever-present, not-so-hot best friend? What's even more complicating is Nate's growing feelings for June, whose true beauty starts to emerge.

Why That's Not Even Hot

  1. The title is completely horrendous and doesn't make any sense.
  2. Christabel is one of the most ludicrously over the top Mary Sues ever to appear on the screen (not surprising, since Paris Hilton also produced the film); she's absolutely beloved by everybody, is repeatedly called the hottest woman in Los Angeles, has no character flaws, spends all her free time working for animal charities, and never does anything throughout the film that would cause anyone to see her in a remotely negative way.
  3. Generic rom-com story about a man chasing the seemingly perfect woman, only to find that her less attractive friend is his true love. There isn't even the usual twist you'd expect (Christabel turning out to be pretty on the outside but ugly on the inside, and vice-versa for June), leaving no explanation as to why Nate would want to dump Christabel in favor of June.
  4. Very poor acting, especially from Paris Hilton, who is extremely bland and lifeless, and Greg Wilson, who is completely annoying and insufferable.
  5. Terrible cinematography.
  6. Aggressively childish writing.
  7. The make-up on June completely fails to make her look ugly, and instead just makes her look like an attractive woman with some bad face paint applied.
  8. Extremely questionable moral, which implies that even if you're a good person on the inside, you don't deserve love unless you also look good.
  9. Unlikeable characters.
  10. Offensive sexist, gay, and racist jokes, similar to Disaster Movie (which also came out the same year as this film).
  11. Awful soundtrack.
  12. Many disgusting gross-out scenes involving around June.
    • One even has her disgusting toenail fall off, and lands in another guy's MOUTH!!!
  13. Lame direction by Tom Putnam.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. They at least avoid the cliché of Christabel completely losing it when Joel breaks up with her, with the two deciding to stay friends afterwards, something quite rare for a romantic comedy like this.

Box Office

Opening on February 8, 2008, The Hottie and the Nottie grossed $9,000 on opening day, and it went on to earn $27,696 on its opening weekend, each theater averaging $249. The Houston Chronicle determined that, based on average ticket prices, this represented an average of 35 people per theatre on its opening weekend, or an average of five per showing. In the end, the film grossed $1,596,232 worldwide, making the film a gigantic financial disaster.

For its release in the United Kingdom, the film was advertised as "The Number One Film", with small print revealing its being number 1 on the Internet Movie Database's Bottom 100. The film opened at number 32 and grossed $34,231 in 28 theaters in the UK.

Critical Response

The film received near-universally negative reviews from critics. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 4% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 67 reviews, concluding that "The Hottie and the Nottie is a crass, predictable, and ineptly staged gross-out comedy that serves little purpose beyond existing as another monument to Paris Hilton's vanity." Metacritic reported the film had an average score of 7 out of 100, based on 18 reviews — indicating "overwhelming dislike.", on IMDb it holds a 1.8/10 making it the 9th lowest rated film on the site currently.

The Hottie & The Nottie won 3 Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Actress for Paris Hilton, Worst Screen Couple (Paris Hilton and Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore), and Worst Actress of The Decade for Paris Hilton (Along with House Of Wax and Repo! The Genetic Opera). Paris Hilton also won Worst Supporting Actress (for Repo! The Genetic Opera). The film was nominated for Worst Picture, but lost to The Love Guru.

  • June Diane Raphael and Lady Gaga were both considered for the role of June.
  • The U.K. failure of the movie alongside with the U.S. failure of Doogal led to Pathé closing down their UK distribution branch in 2009 and having Warner Bros. and Fox distribute Pathe's films theatrically in the country, after both the American failure of Doogal and the British failure of The Hottie and the Nottie (this film), with one of their films Chatroom being transferred to the now defunct Revolver Entertainment.
