The Bodyguard is a 1992 American romantic thriller film directed by Mick Jackson (not to be confused with Michael Jackson), written by Lawrence Kasdan, and starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. Costner stars as a former Secret Service agent-turned-bodyguard who is hired to protect Houston's character, a music star, from an unknown stalker.

Best-selling pop diva Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) has a stalker whose obsession has risen to the level of disturbing threats. At the urging of her manager (Gary Kemp), Rachel hires former secret service agent Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner) as her bodyguard. Initially resented and treated with disdain for his hard-nosed security procedures, Farmer soon becomes an integral part of Rachel's inner circle. As they spend more time together, client and protector become closer still.

Bad Qualities

  1. The plot barely makes any sense. A ton of random stuff happens out of nowhere in the film.
  2. Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston don't give off good performances.
  3. The pacing's very incoherent, as scenes just jump from one to another.
  4. Houston's character is unlikable, as she fights and curses at Costner's character a lot.
  5. Extremely slow-paced, clichéd, melodramatic, and predictable storyline.

Good Qualities

  1. Houston's performance is at least better than Costner's.
  2. The soundtrack is arguably one of the best soundtracks of all time, with songs like "I Will Always Love You" and "I Have Nothing".
  3. A storyline of a singer falling in love with her bodyguard is a great idea but it's executed poorly.
  4. Decent action scenes.

The Bodyguard received mixed to negative reviews from film critics. As of December 2018, the film holds a 34% rating on the film aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus, "The Bodyguard is a cheesy, melodramatic potboiler with occasional moments of electricity from Whitney Houston." It received seven Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Picture. Nevertheless, it has garnered a cult following among Whitney Houston fans.

The film earned $410 million worldwide against a $25 million budget.
