Samurai Cop is a 1991 American direct-to-video action film, directed by Amir Shervan and starring Robert Z'Dar, Matt Hannon and Mark Frazer. It is the first installment in the Samurai Cop movie franchise.

When a Japanese gang runs amok in Los Angeles, the LAPD calls in Joe Marshall, a cop with samurai training, to take them down.

Why It Sucks

  1. Horrible scene continuity, with many scenes, suddenly changing lighting and time of day, and at one point, one character is clearly played by two different actors in two different scenes.
  2. Awful dialogue, such as when Joe Marshall is asked what a katana is, with him replying with "It means Japanese sword."
  3. Awful acting.
  4. Despite Joe Marshall knowing "fluent Japanese", he always butchers Japanese names.
  5. Many of the characters are vague and unlikable.
  6. The film is riddled with a lot of plot holes.
  7. False advertising: One of the DVD covers depicts Joe having short hair and wearing the usual police uniform, but in the actual movie, he has long hair and usually wears a black vest.
  8. In some scenes, Joe Marshall is wearing a wig instead of real hair - this is due to the fact that his actor, Matt Hannon, thought he finished shooting the film and had cut his hair shorter.
  9. There are absurd amounts of sexism in the movie against women; they are only in the film so that Samurai Cop can make love with them or for them to look sexy and act horny.
  10. The dubbing for a few characters is so bad that it doesn't match their lips or mouth movements at all.
  11. Bad audio quality.
  12. Terrible cinematography: Many shots are poorly framed, and the camera frequently shakes.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The soundtrack at least fits the film’s tone and atmosphere.
  2. Like films such as The Room, Samurai Cop is enjoyable and funny for how awful it is.
  3. It is at least better than its sequel, Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance due to it having intentions of being a good movie. Samurai Cop 2, however, is intentionally bad and intentionally worse than this film.
  4. "The Undercover Cop" joke is pretty funny and one of the only good bits of the film.
