Oldboy is a 2013 American neo-noir action thriller film directed by Spike Lee and written by Mark Protosevich. It stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley. The film is an official remake, or as labeled by Lee a "reinterpretation", of Park Chan-wook's 2003 film of the same name.

In 1993, Joe Duset is a drunk man who ended up locked up in a hotel room for 20 Years. He gets confused and wonders why he was in there and the only form of escapism is the TV. He sees his daughter on TV and gets motivated and quits drinking. When released, he tries to find out why he was held captive in the first place.

Why It Sucks

  1. Spike Lee has made clear that he doesn't want anyone remaking any of his movies ever; yet, he goes on to remake one of the most critically acclaimed movies of all time, poorly; which makes him a complete hypocrite.
  2. In the original film, Oh Dae Su masturbates to random things on the TV in shame because he's been disconnected from the outside world for so long. In this remake, Joe Duset masturbates to a pornographic program on TV and he is seen enjoying it.
  3. There is not enough screen time for Joe Duset to build chemistry with a rat and was killed way too early in the film.
  4. In the original, Oh Dae Su has grown to hate dumplings since it's the only meal he gets every single day, but in the remake, Joe Duset demands he wants anything else than dumplings despite the fact he gets a variety of other food items and the alcohol he is addicted to.
  5. Joe Duset is somehow very good at martial arts despite watching channels all about Yoga.
  6. There is no good reason to add 5 more years to the jail sentence. The original only added 5 years from its initial 10 in the mange because that was a maximum sentence in South Korea.
  7. The hallway fight scene is underwhelming in the remake. The hallways are much more spaced out and in the United States, it's less reasonable as it has more lenient gun laws.
  8. Some scenes makes no sense.
    • One of the scenes show show Joe Duset stealing a hammer from a woman who hammers it in concrete which does not behave the same as wood.
    • Joe Duset's phone scrolls when he's not swiping it.
  9. Terrible voice acting.
    • The mysterious phone caller calling Joe Duset sounds like a cheesy British Villain.
  10. Music is played in very inappropriate situations.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. As explained in WIS3. Joe Duset building chemistry with a rat is an interesting concept but was unfortunately poorly executed.

Oldboy is a box office bomb only grossing 5.2 Million USD in the Box Office. Oldboy holds a 39% rating on rotten tomatoes.

  • One of the bootleg DVD's actually has a quote on the box by B. Mcintash saying "An Unnecessary Sub-Par Remake".
