Jonah Hex is a 2010 American western superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Directed by Jimmy Hayward in his live-action debut, and written by Neveldine/Taylor, the film stars Josh Brolin in the title role, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon and Wes Bentley.

Having cheated death, gunslinger and bounty hunter Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) has one foot in the natural world and one in the supernatural. His unusual nature gives him the ability to track down anyone or anything, so the Army makes him an irresistible offer: It will erase the warrants on his head if he will find Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich). Turnbull, his oldest enemy, is preparing to unleash hell on Earth and will stop at nothing to kill him.

Why It Gets Ugly

  1. The action scenes are just very standard and typical.
  2. Its runtime is way very short as it runs 81 minutes, compared to the rest of DC movies. This is also unacceptable for DC standards.
  3. Nearly all of the performances are either too over the top or too dull, especially Megan Fox (except Josh Brolin).
  4. Some of the characters are really bland or unlikable such as the forgettable side characters, Turbill who is an dislikable villain and Lilah Black who is a pointless love interest character.
  5. Lackluster visual effects.
  6. Its very boring most of time.
  7. The story is very predictable with several plot holes.
  8. The ultimate critical and commercial failure of the movie permanently killed off Jimmy Hayward's directorial career with the 2013 critically panned animated film Free Birds being his last film up to date. Also, his directions is so weak.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Jonah Hex is a decent protagonist.
  2. Nicely done musical score by Marco Beltrami.
  3. The designs of the sets are well crafted.
  4. Josh Brolin's performance is decent.

Jonah Hex was a major reception failure. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 12% based on 150 reviews and an average rating of 3.47/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Josh Brolin gives it his best shot, but he can't keep the short, unfocused Jonah Hex from collapsing on the screen.". On Metacritic, the film has a score of 33 out of 100 based on 32 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C+" on an A+ to F scale. On Letterboxd, the film earned the score of 1.7/5, becoming the 1st lowest film produced by Legendary Pictures, behind 10,000 BC, Seventh Son, and The Ant Bully.

Keith Phipps of The A.V. Club gave the film a rare "F" rating, stating "the 81 minutes (including credits) of Jonah Hex footage that made it to the screen look like something assembled under a tight deadline, and possibly under the influence." Roger Ebert gave the film a negative review, saying that the film "is based on some DC Comics characters, which may explain the way the plot jumps around. We hear a lot about graphic novels, but this is more of a graphic anthology of strange occult ideas."
