Hangman is a 2017 crime thriller starring Al Pacino, Karl Urban and Brittany Snow. The film was written by Michael Caissie and Charles Huttingter. The film was directed by Johnny Martin.
Former detective Ray Archer (Pacino) is called out of retirement and is aided by Will Ruiney (Urban) to solve a case involving a serial killer’s activities that are inspired by the popular game of Hangman.
Why It Sucks
- The story is weak.
- Al Pacino sounds like he's sleepwalking and does a poor Southern accent. Sometimes, his fake accent goes back to his normal accent.
- The killer's name of the game is weak, despite it being an interesting idea.
- Awkward dialogue.
- Lame ending.
- Al Pacino dies in a pointless way near the end.
Hangman was panned by critics and audiences. The film currently holds a 4% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average of out of 3.2 out of 10, but lacks a critic consensus. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com described the film as "A cheapo Seven knock-off that one would be tempted to suggest is beneath the talents of everyone involved." Frank Sheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote in Hangman style "This formulaic thriller is m_di_c_e." Rob Hunter of Film School Rejects stated in his review "The only winning move is not to play." So far, the only favorable review came from Richard Roeper of The Chicago Sun-Times who awarded the film a three out of four stars and said "In its own and cheesy and entertaining way, Hangman kept me guessing throughout."
Hangman made a box office gross of only $316,728 making it a box office disaster.
