Honest Trailers

Halloween Kills is a 2021 slasher film, directed by David Gordon Green. It is the sequel to the 2018 film Halloween, with Jamie Lee Curtis and James Jude Courtney reprising their roles.

Immediately after the events of the previous film, Laurie Strode and her family must continue to fend off Michael Myers, with the assistance of the Haddonfield townsfolk.

Bad Qualities

  1. In some funny and odd way, the characters are stupid beyond reason, frequently getting killed in easily-avoidable ways, have no communication systems to help know where Michael is, and have no common sense or a sense of self-preservation.
    • Whenever a group attacks Michael, they neutralize their advantage of numbers by only attacking one at a time.
  2. Related to the above point, the movie goes a little too far in portraying Michael as almost immortal and invincible, whereas in the original he was powerful, but also still human.
  3. False advertising: The trailers constantly depict Laurie preparing herself to find Michael and putting an end to his terrors, but she spends most of the movie in the hospital doing nothing.
  4. There's not much of a plot to speak of, as it's basically just Michael going around and killing people in bloody ways (yes, really).
  5. Terribly written dialogue; most notably, there's gratuitous overuse of the movie's tagline "Evil dies tonight!".
  6. The movie recycles too many elements from the previous Halloween films.
  7. The movie at one point has a rather unsubtle message about mob mentality being bad when the Haddonfield residents end up killing an innocent mental patient.
    • It's very unclear how did they mistake a 6'6" tall bulky man to a 5'7" big man and their excuse is "how do you know how he looks without the mask" despite an average human can tell if it's the person they're after judging from their physical appearance which can give a clear hint if it's the Michael they are after.
  8. The gory kills get kind of excessive after a while, as if the movie tried to substitute good writing with more blood.
  9. We already know Michael isn't going to die here because this movie is the second in a trilogy, so there's no real stakes.
    • Overall, the movie kind of feels like a lot of pointless filler.
  10. Much like several previous films in this franchise, the way this movie explains how Michael survived the end of the last film is beyond ridiculous and comes across as a lame excuse to justify this movie's existence.
  11. The poster is lazy as it features an ugly person facing left in an orange smokey background, which looks like the portraits from Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, specifically from N. Gin and Papu-Papu.

Good Qualities

  1. Some of the plot points had the potential to be pretty interesting, if they were executed better.
  2. The acting is still good, In addition to the role reprisals from the previous films, this film also brought back more actors from previous Halloween films, including Nancy Stephens as Nurse Chambers and Charles Cyphers as Sheriff Bracket.
  3. Some of the bloody kills are pretty entertaining.
  4. The reenactment of the climax of the 1978 finale looks spot-on.
  5. The alternative ending makes more sense.
  6. "Hunter's Moon" by Ghost.
  7. The three dead victims of Michael Myers are wearing the three Silver shamrock masks from Halloween III: Season Of The Witch.
  8. Michael Myers is still an awesome villain.

The movie received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, with a 39% critic rating and 66% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus "Halloween Kills should satisfy fans in search of brute slasher thrills, but in terms of advancing the franchise, it's a bit less than the sum of its bloody parts".

  • An extended cut of the movie with an uncut ending is due to release later. It might be included on the Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD releases.
