Bad Qualities
- The biggest problem with Snyder's films are that he favors style over substance, as a result his movies tend to be pretty looking but shallow and lacking in more important aspects like story depth or character development. The movies also try too hard to be deep but this backfires immensely as the supposed deep themes are just vapid and meaningless.
- For example, Watchmen and 300 both looked amazing but lacked the substance or depth of the original source material.
- Is known for trying too hard to be dark and edgy, but most of the time the movies are just dark for the sake of dark with little to no substance as the overly dark tone doesn't actually enhance the movies' already weak narratives.
- Snyder once made an infamous statement regarding how he would make Batman darker than the Dark Knight Trilogy version, where he said "Okay, no, Batman's cool. He gets to go to a Tibetan monastery and be trained by ninjas. Okay? I want to do that. But he doesn't, like, get raped in prison. That could happen in my movie. If you want to talk about dark, that's how that would go."
- His movies overuse slow motion, to the point that it's become a stereotype about him alongside Michael Bay's explosions, M. Night Shyamalan's plot twists and J.J. Abrams' mystery boxes and lens flare.
- He misunderstands the characters when it comes to his DC films and gives them bad characterizations that barely resemble the source material for the sake of making them edgier, while claiming that he's "deconstructing" said characters as an excuse for those poor interpretations.
- For example, he made Superman a boring Jesus allegory, Lex Luthor a whacko Joker imitation, and Batman a crazed psychopath who intentionally kills using guns.
- Leaks regarding his scrapped cut of Justice League indicated that Snyder would've made Aquaman a severe alchoholic, Wonder Woman a depressed failure, Cyborg would've had suicidal tendencies, and Superman would've turned evil.
- He completely missed the point of Watchmen by making the characters too badass with nearly no flaws.
- He even insults fans of Batman by saying people who prefer him not killing (which is almost all of the Batman fandom) need to "get out of their dream world". This actually shows that he can't handle criticism well.
- His films tend to be shoved full of sequel baiting and intentionally leave plot threads unresolved; this is best demonstrated in Batman v Superman.
- According to some reports Snyder's intended cut of Justice League would've also had multiple sequel baits.
- Due to the altering of Justice League and cancelling of its planned sequels following Snyder leaving the DCEU, the multiple sequel baits shoved into BvS most likely will not be solved ever.
- He tried to make a complicated excuse to why there is Turkish Airlines product placement in BvS.
- Thanks to his movies he caused lots of major misconceptions of characters and comic storylines. Speaking of comic storylines, Snyder completely misses the context whenever he references other stories, such as when he was referencing Dark Knight Returns which lead people to think that TDKR Batman was a killing psychopath yet that isn't true at all.
Good Qualities
- He made some good and/or decent films such as Dawn of The Dead (the 2004 remake of the 1978 film of the same name), 300, Watchmen, and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. In fact, some of his DCEU work such as Wonder Woman (which he served as co-producer and co-writer) and Aquaman (which he served as executive producer) are good.
- He can do some great camera work but again he's all about style over substance.
- In fairness, Snyder's concept of a Superman who isn't just a do good boyscout could've been good if it had been executed properly.
- For example, post-Crisis material gave Superman development and emotion while still resembling the character and keeping it's core themes.
- And to be fair once again, he did have a good reason to step down from post-production of Justice League in May 2017. The reason being his adoptive daughter Autumn committed suicide two months earlier and Snyder wanted to be with his family during the time to cope with their loss, which is understandable and we at Awful Movies Wiki do feel bad for him and his family for what they had to go through.
- Much like Adam Sandler, he's a nice person in real-life and treats his own fans with respect, unlike most celebrities.
