Annabelle is a 2014 American supernatural horror film by Atomic Monster Productions and The Safran Company, directed by John R. Leonetti, written by Gary Dauberman and produced by Peter Safran and James Wan. It is a prequel to 2013's The Conjuring and the second installment in the Conjuring Universe franchise. The film was inspired by a story of a doll named Annabelle told by Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film stars Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton, and Alfre Woodard. Annabelle premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on September 29, 2014, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 3, 2014, by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.

Plot

John Form (Ward Horton) thinks he's found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia (Annabelle Wallis) : a vintage doll in a beautiful white dress. However, the couple's delight doesn't last long: One terrible night, devil worshippers invade their home and launch a violent attack against the couple. When the cultists try to summon a demon, they smear a bloody rune on the nursery wall and drip blood on Mia's doll, thereby turning the former object of beauty into a conduit for ultimate evil.

Why It Sucks

  1. The idea of Annabelle film is very pointless, because the possessed Annabelle Doll doesn’t looks like it does in real-life. In fact, she was meant to be comic reliefs, not the main stars and Annbelle barely does anything at all, similar to The Nun. It would be the impression that its concept would be good on paper than anything else.
  2. The movie has a jump scare-fest, and that's we hear to say at all.
    • Because of this, it isn't a scary of all.
  3. The story is just boring. On top of this, it noticed that The Conjuring Universe is going to be went downhill.
  4. Lots of unnecessary references like a building called The Barclay from Child's Play is shown.
  5. Anachronism: The movie was set in 1967, but at one point John plays "Cum on Feel the Noize". This song was not released until 1973 by Slade.
  6. It is never explained how Janice's demon form turns into a adult when she always runs into the door.
  7. It tries to built up, but it ends up being cheap jump scares, and it ruins.
  8. Completely idiotic characters with no development whatsoever.
  9. Pointless death scenes, like Annabelle Higgins.
  10. Very poor directing from John R. Leonetti, the same director behind Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
  11. Very weak plot that relies on clichés.
  12. Unexplained plot hole: If Mia didn't wake up, she can't see window with Annabelle Higgins kills them in the bedroom and none of them would happen at all.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The cinematography are great.
  2. Nice soundtrack.

Reception

Annabelle received generally negative reviews from critics and fans alike, many of whom felt the film inferior to its predecessor. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports an approval rating of 29% based on 130 reviews, with an average rating of 4.41/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Annabelle borrows unabashedly from better horror films, content to leave viewers with a string of cheap jolts that fail to build on the far more effective The Conjuring.". On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 37 out of 100, based on 27 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".
