UglyDolls is a 2019 animated musical comedy film directed by Kelly Asbury. The film stars Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton, Wanda Sykes, Gabriel Iglesias, Wang Leehom, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX, Lizzo, Nick Jonas and Pitbull. The film was distributed by STX Entertainment and animated by Reel Fx Creative Studios.

Plot

In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weirdness is celebrated, strangeness is special and beauty is embraced as more than meets the eye. After traveling to the other side of a mountain, Moxy and her UglyDoll friends discover Perfection -- a town where more conventional dolls receive training before entering the real world to find the love of a child. Soon, the UglyDolls learn what it means to be different -- ultimately realizing that they don't have to be perfect to be amazing.

Why It Sucks

Much like The Emoji Movie, the film is a complete cash-grab and was only made just to advertise the UglyDolls plushes. It's basically a commercial disguised as a movie.
- It is also similar to films like The Angry Birds Movie in the aspect of it being based on something that isn't very popular these days, Even though The Angry Birds Movie was executed well.
Uglydolls was released in a time of multiple large-scale film releases such as Avengers: Endgame and Pokemon Detective Pikachu, which didn't help the box office numbers.
The movie spent 9 years in production and ended as a generic "be yourself" movie, which has been done tons of times in movies like Wonder, Maya the Bee: The Movie, Bratz and, The Emoji Movie.
Terrible voice acting that wastes talented actors who either where those who can act but can't sing or can sing but can't act.
- Blake Shelton stated that the actors recorded their roles during commercial breaks of The Voice, meaning they only spent about five minutes at a time recording.
Failed attempts at comedy, with the biggest offenders being the Gibberish Cat and the line "I'm an individual, just like all of you".
Certain characters just come off as incredibly annoying, such as Tuesday and Moxy.
Not to mention, the plot is very predictable and formulaic, about multiple characters who try to fit in with the other superior characters, but eventually, they accept themselves for who they are.
The perfect dolls look like prep school students when they are actually adults. Also, they look way too human to be convincing dolls.
Moxy is annoying and uninteresting, as she is over-confident, has extreme curiosity, and has the ability to make others feel great.
Pointless pop culture references, such as the film pausing to shove in an Oliver Twist reference.
Lou is a stereotyped leader who is obsessed with fashion, making him a generic antagonist, and he likes praising people by their looks.
The UglyDolls and Perfect Dolls aren't even all that unique. All of the character groups look exactly the same.
The designs for the UglyDolls were completely shattered, as they've been cutesified to appeal towards kids, which makes no sense considering the fact that they're called "UglyDolls".
Mediocre, saccharine, and generic music that sound like they're from the Disney Channel.
The camera, which scans Moxy, randomly says "Tell my family I love them" before breaking.

Redeeming Qualities

Decent animation, which is a nice step up for other Reel FX films.
Good soundtrack.
There is a couple of good jokes.
The ending isn't too bad.
Lou is a really fun villain, mainly thanks to Nick Jonas' sublime performance.
Although Kelly Clarkson doesn't do that great of an acting job here, it's certainly an improvement from From Justin to Kelly.

Reception

The film received negative reviews from critics. It holds a 29% Critic Score and 61% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Metacritic gave the film a 40/100 "Mixed or Average reviews " while audiences on IMDb gave the film a 4.6/10 rating.
