Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back is a 2010 science fiction animated film and is the sequel to Space Chimps. It is produced by Vanguard Animation.

Cheeky chimp Comet wishes he was a fully-fledged space chimp and sneaks onto a rocket bound for the planet Maglor, but back on Earth evil alien Zartog is on the rampage and has taken over "Mission Control". With his friends, Ham, Luna, and Titan he must try to save the day.

Why It Sucks

  1. The animation (while somewhat better than Happily N'Ever After 2) looks Hoodwinked Too! grade and looks like a even more cheaply made Late Original XBOX, XBOX 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Late GameCube, Wii, and 3DS cutscene than the original despite being animated by Prana Studios which is unacceptable, considering that their previous works such as the Unstable Fables trilogy and The ChubbChubbs Save Xmas short looked a lot better.
  2. Bad writing with abysmal comedy and unoriginal plot lines which have ripped off numerous of better films such as E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, Close Encounters, Avatar, Planet of the Apes and Monsters Inc.
  3. The beginning scene lazily reused footage from the first film, only with Comet callback what happen and Ham, Kilowatt and Zartog's voices being edited.
  4. Terrible voice acting, even from voice actors such as Tom Kenny, Patrick Warburton, John DiMaggio, Laura Bailey and other veteran voice actors.
    • Speaking of Tom Kenny, John DiMaggio and Laura Bailey, the three replaced Andy Samberg, Jeff Daniels and Kristin Chenoweth as Ham III, Zartog and Kilowatt without any explanation left behind the scenes, resulting in these three barely sound anything like their original voice actors from the first movie.
  5. More incredibly unlikeable characters that seemed to have been flanderized and lost all of their brain cells. A great example is when the rocket blasts off, making a ton of noise, and nobody notices until Houston came and check Comet's computer to see that Comet was blasting off in the rocket and one of the scientists says "...hey, didn't we have a rocket there? Eh, whatever."
    • Ham went from an annoying and goofy, yet brave chimp who is formerly a performer and later an space chimp to a SpongeBob SquarePants clone without the charm that SpongeBob has with the annoying one left who is still an performer even though he's now an successful space chimp.
      • His obsession with Luna has gone too far in this film, to the point where he has a finger key to Luna's locker room which he thankfully was kidding in front of her, making him a bit of an pervert.
    • Likewise, even Ham's love interest and the only female chimp in the group, Luna has been flanderized from being an intelligent and tolerable voice-of-reason-type chimp who has a passion for space travel to a complete know-it-all clone of Coco Bandicoot who is only there just to point out how annoying, stupid and a total creep Ham is being unlike the first film.
    • Comet went from being an intelligent and supporting tech wiz to an Ham wannabe Gary Stu who spent the entire movie hanging out with KIlowatt on Malgor even though they never even met in the first movie.
    • Dr. Smothers, one of the humans from the first movie, was not seen nor neither is mentioned in this sequel.
    • Titan became more dumber and unlikable than he was in the first movie who is given an admittedly interesting character arc where he is recovering from PTSD, but that's ruined because when he actually sees Zartog, the whole reason he has PTSD to begin with, he goes with him, gives him a tour and lets him enter Mission Control where the scientists held at, yes he really gave a tour and lets the guy that nearly got him killed in an restricted area just to get revenge on Ham and the chimps, making Titan seemed to be more of an secondary antagonist who works for Zartog rather than being a Commander of the chimps.
    • Zartog is still a silly character that doesn't feel like a threat to the space center and felt more of a filler villain.
    • The scientists were even more stupider than they were in the first film as they're seen slacking off eating their ice cream sundaes in the space center instead of noticing the rocket being blast off by Comet and never even know or hear Zartog's gibberish language.
    • Kilowatt (while being likable) can get annoying at times and only serves as filler much like Comet.
    • Houston, while being a wise and supportive chimp, can have a bit unlikable scenes at times like where he did the same thing that the rest of the chimps and the three scientists did when the rocket blast off until he noticed it on Comet's computer.
  6. Poor grasp of the original film (despite having some connection to the original movie and that Vanguard Animation and some of the crew from the first movie being involved).
  7. Horrible soundtrack which was barely used in certain scenes of the movie and felt distorted compared to the original film.
  8. Misleading Subtitle: Despite being called Zartog Strikes Back, Zartog actually doesn't have that much of an impact in the story, Instead, the film seems more content with just filling the runtime with Comet and Kilowatt slacking off on Maglor, thus would have been named "Space Chimps 2: Comet's Mission on Malgor".
    • To make matters worse, the other characters award him by calling him Captain Comet when he barely does anything heroic in the entire movie other than being a filler main character. It should be Ham since he stole the de particler from Zartog and erase him.
  9. Surprisingly cruel ending; When Zartog (in his tiny form) went back to the front yard from the beginning, he got chased away by a dog and Ham's guinea pig, especially compared to the original film.
  10. It has one of the most bizarre product placements ever done, as the machine that de particles things that the three scientists made looks like a Wii remote with iPod buttons in it.
  11. Huge amounts of filler in the first 45 minutes as it mostly contrast of the entire cast either goofing around or slacking off and most of them are forgettable and unoriginal, that felt like they're just there to pad out the running time of the movie.
  12. It ultimately killed the Space Chimps franchise as if it would have been made as a television movie instead.
  13. Parts of the editing and physics are really dreadful, to the point where one can easily tell the errors such as the scene where Zartog got hit by a car felt like it was animated by someone who used 3D software for the first time, Ham and Zartog falling from the sky where the background moves or zooms in like Google maps instead of staying still or that the Comet and Kilowatt filler scenes were putted in during scenes with the humans and Zartog in mission control.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The chimp designs are still not that bad compared to the human characters which are still awkward.
  2. The Senator and Kilowatt (despite being annoying) aren't flanderized much like the rest of the characters and are property the only likable characters in this movie.
  3. A few funny moments such as Zartog speaking alien gibberish.

The film was universally panned and has a critic approval rating of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also had a 2.7/10 on IMDb, which was even worse than the first movie's 4.5/10.

Jambareeqi gave this movie 1 quarter of a strawberry out of 5, claiming that this is "one of the most paper-thin films ever made", while AniMat put it as the 2nd worst animated sequel, criticizing it for its ugly style, stupid characters and most of the film's filler scenes and WatchMojo also placed it as the forth worst animated film of all time.

The film even performed terribly at the British box office, leading to the movie being a direct-to-DVD movie in America.

However, just like the Cory in the House game, it started getting ironic positive reviews on Google, all thanks to its meme status.

If it is from "one of the primates" that brought you Shrek and Shrek 2, how come DreamWorks is not mentioned? Also, #ShrekForLife

The reason Dreamworks isn't mentioned is because Dreamworks didn't make this. Vanguard Animation made it and was distributed by 20th Century Fox (Now known as 20th Century Studios.)
