Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, also known as AVP-R and Aliens vs. Predator 2 in some regions, is a 2007 science-fiction action-horror film that serves as a sequel to 2004’s Alien vs. Predator. Both movies serve as a cross-over between the Alien and the Predator franchise, a cross-over that was first established by Dark Horse Comics in 1989. The movie was directed by brothers Colin and Greg Strause, who are the founders of special-effects company Hydraulix. Unlike the first movie, which was rated PG-13, this movie was rated R.

Upon release, the movie was met with even worse reception than the first movie, from critics, viewers, and fans alike, earning a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes when compared to the first movie’s 22% rating.

Plot

Shortly after the events of the first film, the Predalien (Tom Woodruff, Jr.) that grew out of the Predator Scar wreaks havoc in a Predator ship carrying facehuggers, causing it to crash near Gunnison, Colorado. One of the Predators who survived the crash sends a distress signal which is caught by another Predator, Wolf (Ian Whyte), who then goes to Earth to eliminate the Aliens.

Eventually, the city's residents, such as Dallas Howard (Steven Pasquale), Kelly O’Brien (Reiko Aylesworth), and Eddie Morales (John Ortiz), become trapped in the middle of the battle between the two alien species, forcing them to band together in order to survive.

Why It Sucks

  1. It wasn't screened in advance for critics, which is always a major red flag.
  2. You can barely see for most of the movie, which takes place at night. Even the scenes that take place during day are only slightly visible! There's a behind-the-scenes video of the film's cinematographer complaining about not having the equipment to light the sets properly, suggesting that there were budget problems.
  3. The human characters are forgettable, unlikable, and underdeveloped one-dimensional cardboard cutouts. In fact, some of them are pretty much slasher movie clichés. This is made worse by the abysmal acting.
  4. There are 3 groups of characters, and it feels like an overload. Taking one of the groups out, probably the teen group, would have been better.
  5. Has barely anything to do with the first movie; the closest this movie gets to a link is Scar’s corpse, and the Predalien.
  6. At several points in the movie, the Prealien impregnates women who are already pregnant throughout the movie. Not only is this disgusting for no good reason, it also breaks the lore that is already established by the Alien movies regarding the Aliens’ life cycle.
  7. Action scenes that are disappointing, or hard to see (see number 1).
  8. The beginning of the movie ripped-off the opening scene from Alien 3.
  9. The movie doesn’t take place during the same time frame as Aliens and Alien 3.
  10. The Brothers Strause had no directing experience and the film acts like an advertisement for them to make more movies, like Skyline (though it was a slight improvement to this film). But all that changed when Beyond Skyline was release.
  11. The title is completely misleading, first of all: the predator never fights most of the aliens and the word "Requiem" in the title was the definition for Christianity which this film doesn't relate.
  12. This film nearly killed both Alien and Predator franchises.

The Only Two Redeeming Qualities

  1. There was never a third Alien vs. Predator movie. As Ridley Scott continued the Alien franchise with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. And the Predator franchise continued with Predators and The Predator, which all four of them ignored the Alien vs. Predator films.
  2. Brian Tyler's score is passable.
